Volunteer:

My name is Ellen Steiger.

GRRMF Volunteer Career:

I am a Media Team Member who also helps out in Behavioral Training, Transportation and writing the Hearts of Gold Biographies for GRRMF.

Active Volunteer For:

I have been volunteering with GRRMF for 9 Years now.

Found out about GRRMF:

I found out about GRRMF from Sara Davis, the past GRRMF President and Volunteer.  While I was training her K9 Nose Work dog named Riley, Sara asked me if I would be interested in volunteering for GRRMF.

Inspiration to Volunteer:

My love for Golden Retrievers is my main inspiration for volunteering at GRRMF. I also wanted to help surrendered dogs from a reputable rescue find their new forever homes.

Most Memorable Moment:

My most memorable moment as a GRRMF volunteer is writing bios for the Healing Heart Dogs. It has been so special to see GRRMF take in some of these dogs who are either sick, injured, or nearly dead and bring them back to health. It’s all thanks to GRRMF volunteers, partnering vets, specialist, and trainers that these dogs get a second chance at life. Unfortunately, not all of the dogs survive but the majority of them go on to live are surrounded by nothing but love and get to live happy healthy lives in their new forever homes.

Most Surprising Thing about Volunteering:

The most surprising thing I’ve learned about volunteering is the overall reward of seeing these sweet dogs getting the care and love they deserve. Some dogs come to GRRMF for many different reasons; their families can no longer care for them, their owner passed away, being apart of a puppy mills, found as sprays, or were in previous shelters that reached out to GRRMF for a helping hand. GRRMF Volunteers and Donors put a lot of time and commitment into GRRMF which it makes all that they do possible for these wonderful animals in need.

Heart-Warming GRRMF Highlight:

My favorite heart-warming GRRMF highlight is seeing the efforts that all the different teams put forward to make a difference in the rescues lives that come to us.
From surrender to adoption it is all “boots on the ground” work to restore the health and well being of each rescue dog. Then finding that special home for each dog’s needs and personality. The final smile comes across your face when you see the adoption picture – the families and the dogs are grinning from ear to ear -it brings happy tears to your eyes!

Advice to Potential Volunteer:

If you love dogs and want to help them, give some time to a GRRMF, or any other rescue. Even if you can’t offer much, there will be something you can help with. Check out the various volunteer roles and see what you would like to do.
