Surrender

A compassionate, judgment-free process when life circumstances change

We understand that surrendering your golden is one of the most difficult decisions you may ever face. Life can bring unexpected challenges—health issues, financial changes, family transitions, or situations where you can no longer provide the care your dog needs. At GRRMF, you will always be met with compassion, respect, and understanding.

Our priority is ensuring your golden is safe, supported, and placed in the best possible environment. If you are considering surrendering your dog, please know that you are not alone. We are here to help you through every step of the process.

Common Reasons People Surrender Their Golden

Surrendering a dog is never an easy decision, and it often comes from a place of deep care. Many loving families face circumstances that make it difficult or impossible to continue providing the level of care their golden needs. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Major life changes such as divorce, relocation, or housing restrictions.
  • Health challenges for the owner or dog that require more support than the family can provide.
  • Financial hardship that makes ongoing veterinary or daily care difficult.
  • Time limitations due to work, caregiving responsibilities, or unexpected life events.
  • Behavioral needs that require a different environment or more structure than the family can offer.
    • Before surrendering due to behavioral issues, consider consulting a trainer or behaviorist. Many issues can be resolved with professional help.

You are not alone. Many families who love their dogs deeply still find themselves facing these difficult situations. GRRMF is here to help without judgment. 🐾

How Our Surrender Process Works

GRRMF provides a confidential, judgment-free surrender process designed to ensure your golden receives the care, attention, and support they need. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Step 1: Submit a Surrender Form – Tell us about your dog’s age, health, temperament, and current situation. This helps us understand their needs.
  • Step 2: A GRRMF Volunteer Contacts You – We’ll discuss your dog’s history, answer questions, and guide you through the next steps.
  • Step 3: Veterinary and Behavior Review – Our team reviews your dog’s medical and behavioral information to determine the best placement.
  • Step 4: Safe Transfer to GRRMF – We coordinate a safe, stress-minimized handoff with one of our trained volunteers.
  • Step 5: Placement in a Foster or Sanctuary Home – Your golden will receive loving care, medical support, and a stable environment while we determine the best long-term plan.

What Happens After You Surrender Your Golden?

Once your golden is safely in GRRMF’s care, our team immediately begins ensuring they receive the support, comfort, and stability they need. Here’s what happens next:

  • Transport – Our transport volunteer will take your dog directly to a vet for an initial check-up.
  • Veterinary Evaluation – Every dog receives a medical assessment, vaccinations, and any necessary treatment.
  • Temperament – We get to know your dog’s personality, needs, and preferences to determine the best placement.
  • Placement in a Foster or Sanctuary Home – Your golden will live with a loving, experienced foster family or, if needed, a long-term Sanctuary home.
  • Emotional Support and Stability – Volunteers provide comfort, structure, and reassurance to help your dog adjust and feel safe.
  • Matching With the Right Family – When appropriate, we carefully match your golden with an adoptive family who can meet their needs and provide a loving forever home.

Throughout this process, your golden is treated with the same love, respect, and dedication we give to every dog in our care.

Most families can upload photos directly within the form. If the form does not allow you to attach photos, you may email them to intake@grrmf.org.

Not Sure If Surrender Is the Right Step?

If you’re uncertain about surrendering, we encourage you to speak with a GRRMF volunteer during the initial conversation. While we cannot provide ongoing training or financial assistance, we can listen, answer questions, and help you determine whether surrender is the right step for your dog’s well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can you help if I want to keep my dog but am unsure about surrendering?

  • If you’re uncertain about surrendering, we encourage you to speak with a GRRMF volunteer during the initial conversation. While we cannot provide ongoing training or financial assistance, we can listen, answer questions, and help you determine whether surrender is the right step for your dog’s well-being.

2. How long does it usually take to hear back after submitting the form?

  • An intake volunteer will acknowledge receipt of your request within 72 hours. We are an all-volunteer organization, and each dog requires the help of several volunteers and appointments. If you are working with another rescue or organization and may no longer need our help, please let us know.

3. Is there a fee to surrender my golden?

  • No, there is no fee to surrender your dog. However, donations are always appreciated and help us provide medical care and support for goldens entering our program.

4. What happens to my dog after I surrender them?

  • Your golden will be placed in a loving pre-approved foster home or, if needed, a Sanctuary home. They will receive veterinary care, behavioral support, and the stability they need while we determine the best long-term placement.

5. Will my dog be kept in a kennel?

  • We do not keep our dogs in kennels. This ensures they receive personalized care and attention.

6. What is the evaluation process for fosters?

  • Our foster families undergo the same rigorous approval process as adoptive homes, including a written application, phone screen, home visit, and veterinary reference check.

7. Can I foster my own dog during the surrender process?

  • No. Once a dog is surrendered to GRRMF, they cannot remain with or be fostered by their former owner. This ensures your dog receives consistent care, structure, and support from one of our trained foster families, all of whom have been fully screened and approved through our foster process.

8. Will GRRMF care for my dog long‑term if needed?

  • GRRMF will care for your dog for as long as they need us. We never euthanize a dog because of the length of their stay or lack of an immediate placement. Every golden in our program receives ongoing love, safety, and support until the right forever home is found. Euthanasia is only considered when our veterinary professionals determine it is the most humane option for a dog who is suffering and cannot be made comfortable.

9. What if my dog has medical or behavioral issues?

  • GRRMF accepts goldens with a wide range of medical and behavioral needs. Please be honest on the surrender form so we can ensure your dog receives the appropriate care and placement.

10. Can I stay updated on my dog after surrendering?

  • While we cannot provide ongoing updates, you can be assured that your golden will receive exceptional care. Our volunteers and foster families are dedicated to giving every dog a safe, loving environment.

11. Is the surrender process confidential?

  • Yes. All information you share with GRRMF is kept strictly confidential. We respect your privacy and your dog’s safety at every step.
