Weathering the Storm

It's that time of year again - be pawsitively prepared!

Here are essential steps that pet owners should take to ensure their furry companions’ safety during a hurricane. Create an emergency kit specifically for your pets. Keep it easily accessible and well-stocked.

Create an Emergency Kit for Pets

  • Food: Store at least a three-day supply of pet food in an airtight, waterproof container
  • Water: Have enough water for your pets to last at least three days
  • Medicines and Medical Records: Keep your pet’s medical records handy, as boarding kennels, veterinarians, and shelters may require them. Ensure that vaccinations are up to date.
Important Documents: Gather registration information, adoption papers, and vaccination documents
  • First Aid Kit: Include items like cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape, scissors, antibiotic ointment, flea and tick prevention, latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol, saline solution, and a pet first aid reference book
  • Collar or Harness with ID Tag: Make sure your pet wears a collar or harness with an ID tag and rabies tag. Keep a leash handy
  • Crate or Pet Carrier: Have a sturdy, safe crate or carrier in case you need to evacuate. It should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down
  • Sanitation Supplies: Pack pet litter and a litter box (if appropriate), newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags, and household chlorine bleach
  • A Picture of You and Your Pet: If you become separated, having a photo of you and your pet together will help document ownership and assist others in reuniting you
  • Familiar Items: Include treats, toys, and bedding to reduce stress for your pet.

Know Your Safe Place

  • Identify a safe location where you can take your pets before disasters strike. Develop a buddy system with neighbors, friends, or relatives to ensure someone can care for or evacuate your pets if you’re unable to do so
  • Consider microchipping your pet for permanent identification.

Stay Informed

  • Keep an eye on weather updates and evacuation orders.
  • Always bring your pets indoors at the first sign or warning of a storm or disaster.

Remember, being prepared can make a significant difference in keeping your beloved pets safe during and after a hurricane.
