Scout’s (fka Zoey Mina) sweet and happy personality was apparent the moment she and her future dad met. No sooner had he sat down in her foster mom’s home than she jumped into his lap. The bond was instantaneous!
A classic “velcro” dog, Scout doesn’t want to be out of sight — and preferably not out of arm’s length — anytime her dad is with her. While she’s made great strides in learning not to tackle other people at the front door, she still LOVES a hug whenever he gets home from work. Blessed with an infectious joy, when Scout’s excited, she shows it with her entire body, especially by wiggling her bum, and when she and her dad are in bed at night, she loves to snuggle up to him and let her tongue hang out in a sweet smile
The ultimate adventure dog, thriving on long walks and hikes, Scout has truly lived up her name! Her dad, a criminal defense lawyer from Alabama, was set on naming a female dog Scout — the narrator and daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” She not only LOVES going on “sniffaris,” she knows when she and her dad are approaching the trailhead for the Black Bear Wilderness Area Loop in Sanford, one of her favorite spots, and she can barely contain her excitement. There she sees hogs, birds and squirrels too numerous to count.
At home, Scout’s favorite toys are the Pickle Pocket and the giant wishbone from Benebone. She loves anything that can withstand a good chew session. But what makes her dad laugh is the fact he’s never seen a dog relax as hard as she does! He’ll check the camera while he’s at work and she’s completely laid out on her back watching TV.
A fan of car rides, Scout’s first road trip to visit her dad’s sister in Atlanta was an unqualified success. She especially enjoyed playing with her two golden cousins. They also make frequent trips to St. Augustine to see her dad’s girlfriend and Zoe, her English Lab.
Two areas that Scout and her dad had been diligently working on involved her kennel and her sense of security. The kennel used to be so traumatic for her that she would go limp as she neared it and she would refuse to stay inside. Now she’s confident enough to enter the kennel on command and is getting better at “self-soothing” once the door’s closed. She also had to acclimate herself to having Zoe in the apartment on weekends. Finally, after months of work, she and Zoe are great friends. They like to play tug over toys and give each other little kisses when her dad and his girlfriend walk them on leash together.
Currently enrolled in beginner training with Best Paw Forward, Scout is doing very well and will likely be ready for advanced work very soon.
“Scout is joy personified and I couldn’t feel luckier to be her dad. Thank you, GRRMF, for your help throughout this entire process!”
