Emmy Mindi’s Success Story

Emmy Mindi’s Success Story

As Emmy’s foster-to-adopt family, they knew how special she was and couldn’t wait to make it official!

They’re also far busier now since energetic Emmy likes to play, preferably outside. Unique in that she doesn’t just want to be loved, she wants to participate, giving her parents great hugs and snuggles. Intuitive and intelligent, she plays with dogs of all sizes, doing so on their level. She has a “fur cousin” corgi named Stella and Emmy will lie down to play with her so that Stella can also have fun. If it gets too rough, she sits up for a minute. On the other hand, when she plays with her German shepherd “fur cousin,” she turns into a speed demon so that she can beat him to the ball! And she respects Chloe, her older golden sister. She won’t start to eat or drink or even walk through a door until Chloe does so first.

Her favorite activities are taking rides in the RV and swimming. She sits quietly staring out the window at the pool, waiting patiently for someone to take her swimming, and although she’s neither a graceful nor a great swimmer, she LOVES it! She also LOVES sticks. Her parents, however, don’t love Emmy’s love of sticks because after playing with them, she eats them.  She used to play “keep away” whenever they tried to take them from her, but, being resourceful, she found an endless supply in the backyard, proudly running, playing and pouncing on each stick for 20 minutes all by herself.

She once chose a stick that was too long, and when she came running up the damp porch stairs, the end of her stick caught one of the spindles and she wiped out like Bambi on ice! Her parents laughed and her mom’s certain they offended her because she started barking and bouncing around like the lovable nut that she is.

On a sadder note, though, shortly after Emmy’s arrival, her parents noticed some black skin on her inner legs and “belt.” Thinking that she wasn’t a full golden, they ordered a DNA kit and learned that she carries a rare gene for a skin disorder called ICH1 (Ichthyosis). There isn’t a cure or even a way to keep her comfortable once it gets truly bad. Some of her littermates have already passed, and since they know she’s unlikely to be an old dog, they’re making certain that she “enjoys the ride!”

Emmy is so full of love and life that her mom can’t imagine what they did before she came along. As much as she loves her dad, she’s her mom’s shadow. Sometimes if her mom stops or turns to go back the other way too quickly, Emmy runs into her. If there’s a storm, she’s like her mom’s second skin. Never stinting on her affection, however, Emmy also loves snuggling with Chloe and her feline sister Miss Kitty. In fact, she and Miss Kitty frequently exchange kisses and help to ground each other.

Emmy, to quote her mom, is a special girl and her parents love her dearly.
