Update:  September 7, 2020

Toby had a busy pre-Labor Day week.  He had his stitches out, started the 120 day Heartworm protocol and moved to a new foster home. You just can’t keep this sweet boy down; his vet was impressed with his incision and his mobility -not to mention the non-stop tail wagging and happy disposition.

One hurdle down, now on to beating that pesky Heartworm. Toby is scheduled for his Heartworm treatments in October and November. His new foster family will be lovingly caring for him during his Heartworm treatment.

Toby’s wonderful progress and medical needs are being taken care of by many volunteers, veterinarians and from the generous donations of all our supporters.  What a difference acts of kindness can make – Thank you for all you do for these beautiful dogs!

Update:  August 29, 2020

Toby is feeling much better!  “His incisions are healing perfectly and his mobility is improving daily. He is interacting with his foster fur siblings and engaging in toy sharing and tug.  No “bitey face” or wrestling as he is still figuring out his place in the herd.” reports his wonderful foster mom.  Toby welcomes invitations to get on the couch or bed for loving snuggles from his foster family.  He’s also getting some lessons on manners and is working on not jumping up on people and taking treats gently.

Toby’s stitches are due to come out on September 3rd and he will also get a recheck of his ears at that time.  He is currently taking a heavy dose of antibiotics for the Heartworms and will start injections in October.  Toby has been through so much and yet his foster mom says that this sweet golden boy “is always smiling and wagging his tail happily.”

The progress Toby has made so far is amazing, but he still has a lot to overcome and learn.

With the loving support Toby has received so far, he is gearing up, with his floppy ears, to fly to those new heights and start his new beginnings.  GRRMF and his foster family wish is to see Toby in his forever home for Christmas!  Your continued support and donations towards Toby’s medical care will help us make that wish come true!  Thank you for giving from your hearts for all the beautiful dogs that need your help.

Life is often unfair and challenging, but where there is darkness there is also hope for better days ahead.  Toby, a sweet and kind two year old, is here to show us how he will triumph over extreme challenges with a smile on his face and a wag of his tail.

Toby was admitted to the animal hospital emergency room by GRRMF volunteers when his owners difficult circumstances prevented them from giving him the medical care he needed. When he entered the hospital he was dragging his right front leg, his beautiful face was speckled with undetermined “pox like” marks and his left eye was swollen. Despite his condition, he wagged his tail and seemed to smile as if he knew help was on the way.

After a series of examinations, radiographs and tests, it was determined that Toby had been shot in his paw. The tests also showed that there was complete nerve damage and poor Toby has been fighting a severe infection. Toby would never regain the use of his leg and his best chances of survival were to amputate his right front leg. As for his face, it was birdshot or BB’s that caused the wounds. It is still being determined if there is a piece of shot lodged under his left eye.

The next day, Toby was released to a partnering GRRMF animal hospital for an “intake” check up (routinely done for newly surrendered dogs) and laser therapy on his surgical site.  The results of his examination would challenge Toby even further with another hurdle to overcome; he was found to be heartworm positive.  This sweet boy will need four months of therapy to rid him of his advance state of heart worms and time to recover from surgery.  As he navigates life as a tripawd and battles heartworm he will have his loving, patient and experienced foster mom and family to lean on.

So what is the upside to this heartbreaking story – – well, Toby of course!  In true Golden Retriever fashion, his temperament is sweet, his heart is full of love and forgiveness and his joyful outlook is contagious. His medical care, thus far, has been extensive and expensive. But we can’t give up now, Toby is worth every penny and he has a long and happy life to live with his forever family.

Through it all this boy has been smiling and still believes the world is a kind place. He has the heart and soul of an angel. With your help and support, GRRMF will make sure that Toby soars to new heights and new beginnings.

Follow Toby’s story and watch his improvements as he conquers his physical challenges with a smile and a tail wag.  His future is so bright – he’s got to wear shades!

It is stories like Toby’s that makes GRRMF so grateful to have the resources available from your generous donations. Your continued moral and financial support enables GRRMF to take immediate action to save all the precious lives that come through our doors.  With your donation we can save dogs, like Toby, without the deadly delay of searching or pleading for dollars.

“Animal lovers are a special breed of humans, generous of spirit, full of empathy,
perhaps a little prone to sentimentality, and with hearts as big as a cloudless sky.”
