Sociable Skipper sweetens everyone’s day simply by being Skipper.
While Skipper and Kimberly visit schools, libraries, assisted living and other adult facilities, Skipper especially enjoys visiting children. He sees their smiles and gets excited knowing they want to pet him. At one particular school where the children are uneasy around dogs, he seems to sense their anxiety and looks at them in an effort to help them relax. Sometimes they touch him and that is enough. Sometimes just being in his presence helps them.
During one particular visit to an assisted living facility, Skipper deeply impacted a memory care resident. The woman, who used to have and work with dogs, had tears coming down her face while petting him, and she said how meaningful their visits were. She then said Kimberly could go and that she would keep Skipper!
When he’s home, Skipper loves sunbathing in the backyard, swimming, and playing with his younger brother, Roscoe. At night, he loves lying on the ottoman and chewing a bone, and then brushing his teeth before bed. He also loves his “friends,” knows many by name, and gets very excited when he’s told he’s going to see them.
What melts Kimberly’s heart most about Skipper? His exceptionally expressive eyes: you can tell what he’s thinking based on his eyes. The way his jowls so often get stuck in his teeth. How key words like “treat” or “car ride,” elicit noises of excitement and eager anticipation from him!
In the future, Kimberly not only plans to keep visiting and meeting even more wonderful people, including other handlers and their dogs, but to look into the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training program.
