GRRMF special heros help hurricane orphans

Animal rescue in good weather is hard enough, but our friends and partners go above and beyond in tough weather.

Acadiana Animal Aid in Louisiana jumped in quickly when Harvey hit their partner state of Texas then stalled in Louisiana too. Read about their super rescue power in this local news story.  For more information about this wonderful partner, here is their Facebook page.

Having just come off Hurricane Harvey in the Texas/Louisiana area, Loving Friends Transport (LFT) turned around and started evacuating animals from shelters in the path of Hurricane Irma. LFT is part of the Bay Area Disaster Animal Response Team, transporting animals from natural and man made disasters.  https://www.facebook.com/lovingfriendstransport/

First on the list for Laura and JT was a low lying shelter. They transported their animals to the Chattanooga area, came home, cleaned crates and then moved into Ft. Myers to evacuate ALL of the counties shelter animals and moved them to Atlanta. All this while Irma was still in the Caribbean! LFT then returned home to care for their own animals and after the storm went back to work helping others, while having no power of their own until the September 14th!

Another partner is our wonderful veterinarians. One such vet, Dr. May-Li Cuypers, who consults for Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists, was in the Keys post Irma on a mission to help with emergency assistance with the UF Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service – VETS, please visit their Facebook page to see what they are doing today

Local officials are warning that the state of things in the Keys is primitive but the group was looking forward to being able to provide emergency veterinary care until local clinics were operational and to support stray animals in coordination with the Florida Keys SPCA, Inc. As of September 18th this group had set up operations in Key West and had their first patient.  After 5 days of emergency treatment services in Key West, the team headed northbound back to Gainesville. While they were glad to spend time meeting and helping the pets and people of the Keys, they are glad to be returning them to their local veterinarians strong enough to return services to care again for their community.

GRRMF is honored to be partners with such wonderful people and groups, and a heartfelt thank you to all that help in times of need.
