GRRMF Medical Center – 2024

Jake, Pippa, and Riley are just a few of the dogs who are loving life after an amazing team of vets, specialists, and volunteers worked together to get them the best care possible.

Playful 9-month-old Jake was having difficulty ambulating with both his front legs and his back legs due to severe hip dysplasia. During his medical examination and imaging, it was determined that the ball of his hip joints did not fit into the sockets of his joints, making movement excruciating. Jake needed an FHO surgery if he was ever going to walk comfortably. FHO or femoral head ostectomy removes the head of the femur creating a false joint which reduces discomfort. Jake’s leg muscles will strengthen and keep the bone in place. Jake is strengthening his weakened muscles with specialized physical therapy. Although Jake is now living with his forever family, he is still under GRRMF’s care until he can fully run and play.

Loving Pippa, like several of our other rescues, needed an eyelid entropion surgery. A common eye condition among large breed dogs, it occurs when the eyelid rolls inward causing the lashes and hair on the eyelid to rub against the cornea of the eye. If left untreated corneal ulcers and perforations can develop affecting eyesight and cause extreme pain. Surgery is typically the only option to correct the eyelid. Luckily, Pippa, along with many other of our dogs, received this care and is now living a wonderful life.

Sweet 7-year-old Riley arrived at GRRMF overweight, suffering from severe allergies causing persistent skin infections, and with severely arthritic hips and stifles withbilateral cruciate tears. After many months of expert care by her foster family and vet staff, Riley was finally at her ideal weight yet orthopedic surgery still had to be put off several times due to her allergies causing skin issues. As Riley was trying so hard to be well enough for surgery a family was out there who was willing to try alternative treatments for her by enrolling her in a course of physical therapy with the hopes of avoiding major surgery for this super sweet lady. Today Riley is happily, healthy and home. Her mom says that she’s a special girl and is so thankful that she could adopt her!

These are just a few of the medical cases GRRMF provided to our rescues in 2024. Our medical team volunteers work 24/7 ensuring all our dogs are well cared for and healthy before being adopted into loving homes.
