A special caregiver

Hi!  My name is Judy and I’ve been a GRRMF foster since 2011.  My husband and I were getting ready to retire, our two beautiful golden boys had passed away within months of each other and we were lost.  We knew we wanted to travel extensively and getting a new dog just didn’t seem fair.  We realized with all our travel plans, the poor dog would either be at the kennel or we would have to impose on family and friends.

A friend suggested fostering and GRRMF came to mind.  After applying, phone interview, a home visit, and being accepted, we were ready.  Or so we thought……we chose the 0-3 year old group!

Our first TWO were 3 year old boys that needed lots of love and gentle guidance.  Those two taught us that fostering was going to be a wonderful experience!!  It was fun and inventive; teaching these new dogs old tricks and taking them down the road to be family dogs.  We’ve had goofballs, too scared to eat, lacking confidence, clueless about a leash, abused, and neglected, all of them desperately trying to be the good dog we knew they could be!  It was a learning process for us also as it had been awhile since there had been “pups” in the house!

We have fostered too many to count and there have been a few that grabbed our hearts.  It’s hard to let a dog go that you have invested so much time, love and energy into. Our main focus was and still is, to make sure these dogs were ready to become a family member to a matched home that GRRMF has found through our application process.

Now 5 years later, I can honestly say, “We’ve made a difference in a dog’s life”.  Not to mention the satisfaction you feel when this scared, untrusting, dog you fostered has turned into this fun loving, self-confident, tag wagging dog.  I won’t lie and tell you it’s easy to see them go, but you know you have set this dog up for a wonderful life with a loving family.
