There are many things in life that just get better and better with age and ten year old Maggie is a living breathing proof of that concept. She is a pearl in our senior set. Maggie Two years ago Maggie came to us when her elderly family became too frail to continue caring for her. Poor Maggie came in with very poor muscle tone and weakness that caused her to periodically fall. Making matters worse, shortly after landing at GRRMF she was given only two to six months to live due to bladder cancer. But six months have passed four times since her arrival and Maggie is as good to go as her heart is Golden.

One of the first things we did for Maggie was change her diet and get her to exercise. Then her vet prescribed a daily dose of Piroxicam, a drug that has proven successful in some dogs to retard or reverse the growth of certain cancers. Maggie may have to continue her therapy for life but it’s a regime that is so worth it and as of right now she does not show any signs of cancer. Hurray for Maggie!

Maggie loves to go for a quick swim to cool down during the hot summer months but otherwise she is indoor lady that enjoys the A/C and all the creature comforts of an indoor dog. Maggie is a real Velcro dog wanting to be near you all the time, and she loves to walk around with tennis balls or stuffed animals in her mouth. She does have a mild case of thunder phobia but those fears are quickly alleviated with a dose of the allergy medicine diphenhydramine, e.g. Benadryl or Equate, which often works like a tranquilizer in people and dogs.
